Cecilia Brooke, Chair of the recently-formed South Perth Residents Association, presented John McGrath, MLA for South Perth, with a petition signed by 2,169 people in support of our democratic right to have a say in how we are governed at a local level.
Thanks to John McGrath, MLA, for taking the time to receive the petition and, in anticipation, for presenting it to the Parliament.
Thanks to John McGrath, MLA, for taking the time to receive the petition and, in anticipation, for presenting it to the Parliament.
Text of the petition:
To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly in
Parliament assembled.
We, the undersigned residents of Western Australia, respectfully
call on the Government to, at the earliest opportunity, amend the Local
Government Act 1995 to prevent any amalgamation of councils by a process of
artificial boundary change without ratepayers having the democratic right to
vote as to their acceptance or otherwise.
Your petitioners therefore respectfully request the Legislative
Assembly to amend the Local Government Act of 1995 to ensure that ratepayers
have the right to vote on any planned amalgamation.
Love the red outfit, Cecilia! Definitely a highlight of the photograph.
