This is the personal blog of Ian Ker, who was Councillor for the South Ward of the Town of Vincent from 1995 to 2009. I have been a resident of this area since 1985. This blog was originally conceived as a way of letting residents of Vincent know what I have been doing and sharing thoughts on important issues. I can now use it to sound off about things that concern me.

If you want to contact me, my e-mail is still ian_ker@hotmail.com or post a comment on this blog.

Day 14 (not 12): Kwinana Very Close; East Freo Over 40%;

Yes, I missed counting the two days of the first weekend, but the charts showed them so no damage done.

City of Cockburn                      30.38%
Town of East Fremantle          41.12%
City of Kwinana                        46.03%
City of South Perth                    37.57%
Town of Victoria Park              29.76%

Excitement must be building in Kwinana, now they're getting so close. Just a gentle reminder not to take the foot off the pedal until they have something like 53% - to make sure they aren't undone by informal/invalid votes.

Votes still needed for 50% (but remember need to add a bit for informal/invalid votes):

City of Cockburn                      12,145
Town of East Fremantle              461
City of Kwinana                             724
City of South Perth                   3,330
Town of Victoria Park              4,075

  1. If the South Perth "no" vote gets up, what happens to Wilson? If the Kwinana "no" vote gets up, does the bit of Cockburn that is going to Melville via boundary change still proceed?

  2. If a binding 'no' vote is achieved, Wilson would be left 'high and dry' and would have to be dealt with by a further boundary adjustment proposal - either to put it into Victoria Park or Canning/Gosnells.

The same does not apply, however, to the area of Cockburn going to Melville as that transfer is achieved by the Melville 'boundary adjustment'. A binding 'no' vote has no effect.

A binding 'no' vote in East Fremantle, however, would leave both Bicton/Palmyra and the northern part of Cockburn without a local government and each would have to be dealt with by boundary adjustment. My guess, given the Government's apparent antipathy towards Cockburn and the strong influence of Melville (which I believe would dearly love to get rid of Bicton/Palmyra) on the process so far that Bicton/Palmyra cold go to East Fremantle and northern Cockburn to Fremantle.

We shall see, but my expectation is that the Government would expedite this and the LGAB would not allow the 6 week public submission period on the grounds that these changes are either minor or have already been considered in their previous deliberations.
