This is the personal blog of Ian Ker, who was Councillor for the South Ward of the Town of Vincent from 1995 to 2009. I have been a resident of this area since 1985. This blog was originally conceived as a way of letting residents of Vincent know what I have been doing and sharing thoughts on important issues. I can now use it to sound off about things that concern me.

Simpson Insults Us Again. This Government Just Doesn't Listen - But The Nationals Do

Tony Simpson proves, yet again, his inability to hear what people are saying.

To come out and say that "after the polls at the weekend, I have grave concerns for those areas" and "one of the clear things we see in our community is the inequity and dysfunctions around local government services" harks back to what he said to the rally last year in front of Parliament House, when he said:
"You are here because your Council has not been communicating with you properly and you are misinformed".

Minister, the people who voted in these polls made a considered choice to vote and most of them to vote NO. You insult all of them, yet again, with your ill-considered and arrogant words that you are unable to provide any evidence to support.

I'm not at all sure why Joe Francis, Minister for Emergency Services, Corrective Services, Small Business and Veterans, gets quoted in the piece (except perhaps no other Minister wanted to align with Simpson's intransigent stance), but even after the massive rejection of the merger plans in the polls on Saturday he comes out with this unbelievable piece of nonsense:
"The overwhelming view of people [is that they] don't really care that much about local government."

Well, Joe, if people "don't really care" why not give them a vote and demonstrate that they don't?

I must give credit to Terry Redman and the Nationals, though, for maintaining their principled opposition to Barnett's proposed City of Perth Act.

  1. Please also give credit to Simon O'Brien MLC, from the West online link below...

Mr O'Brien said the new poll results gave the Government an opportunity to "eat a very large serve of humble pie" and rethink its approach. He believed if people in Canning and several other local government areas were given a vote, they would also reject the mergers.
"Why 2000 voters in East Fremantle should be able to have a vote, whereas tens of thousands in Canning don't - that's quite outrageous," Mr O'Brien said. "It's not in the spirit of the Act and I think it offends any sense of fair play.
